About
A well-kept front door to volunteering in BC
Give Local exists to solve one problem — legitimate volunteer opportunities in British Columbia are scattered across dozens of sites, and it’s hard to tell what’s current or real. We put them in one place, describe them honestly, and send you straight to the source.
What Give Local is — and isn’t
Give Local is a directory. We don’t run volunteer programs, we don’t process sign-ups, and we don’t take a cut of anything. When you find an opportunity here, you leave for the organization’s own website and register with them directly. Your personal information never touches Give Local.
We are an independent project. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or speaking for any organization listed here unless we explicitly say so. Listing an organization means it met our criteria below — nothing more.
How we vet a listing
Before an organization goes in the directory, we check that:
- It’s legitimate. It is a registered Canadian charity or non-profit society (verifiable through the CRA Charities Listings), or a recognized public program — a municipality, health authority, school district, or provincial or federal parks body.
- The link is official. The “volunteer page” link points to the organization’s own domain, never a third-party portal or an unofficial page.
- The opportunity is real and current. There is an active volunteer program accepting new people at the time we list it.
- The description is honest. The profile reflects what volunteers actually do, drawn from the organization’s own materials.
Keeping listings fresh
Volunteer programs change — links break, programs pause for a season, age rules shift. We re-check every listing on a rolling six-month cycle, and each organization’s profile shows the month it was last verified. Listings that haven’t been checked yet are marked “verification pending.”
You can help: every profile has a “report an issue” link. If something’s wrong, tell us and we’ll fix or pull it.
This build. This is an early version of Give Local. The starter directory was compiled from public information in September 2026. Some newer entries are still marked “verification pending” while we confirm details with the organization. If you’re relying on a specific detail — a minimum age, whether hours can be signed — confirm it on the organization’s own site.
Land acknowledgement
Give Local is built and maintained on the unceded, ancestral and traditional territories of the Coast Salish peoples — including the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh Nations — and serves communities across many nations’ territories throughout British Columbia.
Keeping it free
Give Local runs on paid hosting and a domain, with no ads and no data collection to offset that. If you’ve found the site useful and want to help cover those costs, there’s an optional way to support Give Local — the directory stays free either way.
